Our Town Hall
Daingean Town Hall, formerly Philipstown Courthouse, is an early Irish county courthouse designed in
1760 that stood on the same site.
Opened in about 1807 it was used as a County Assize until 1833 when its function transferred to the
new courthouse in Tullamore. One courtroom remained in use for quarterly sittings until 1997.
The footprint of the building does not fill the entire site; it has an internal yard to the north and south
enclosed by a tall boundary wall. The entrance façade is fronted by a large public square used as a
car park and has a small fire station to the south elevation.
A new multi-purpose hall was built between the court blocks in 1949 extending to the rear wall of the
site. Numerous other extensions were added in recent years, which are of low quality and are all in a
poor state of repair.
The building & its forcourt create the town's principal space. It is also a well-used community facility
used by many different user groups.
There are fine original late-Georgian ceilings, some original fireplaces, skirting and
doors. An original courtroom is retained complete with judge's platform, timber gallery structure and
timber panelling. On the gallery level some of the original gates are still present as well as the original
stairs to both the front and rear of the court.
Few orignal windows remain in the building, most are twentieth century replacements.
